ABOUT PRN
   
 

The National Poison Centre (Pusat Racun Negara) was set up in 1994 culminating on the services provided by the Integrated Drug and Poison Information Services (IDPIS), Universiti Sains Malaysia since 1982.

IDPIS had evolved from several research activities carried out towards strengthening the health care services, particularly in the areas of information technology and informatics.

It was aimed at auditing health information as well as upgrading and strengthening the handling of drug and poison information directed towards health and allied professionals as well as the lay public.

   
MISSION
 
"To reduce the mortality, morbidity, cost and occurrence of poisoning in a
manner that strives for excellence, compassion and innovation"
   
ACHIEVING IT'S MISSION THROUGH SERVICES:
 
to reduce the risk and occurrence of poisoning;
to encourage optimum treatment of poisoning cases by:
 
providing information on poisons and advice on managing poisoning cases;
 
conducting research and documentation of poisoning incidences;
 
coordinating and conducting poison awareness and prevention education; and,
 
carrying out analytical tests and interpretations of laboratory results.
   
A BRIEF HISTORY
 
1982 : The Integrated Drug & Poison Information Services (IDPIS) was initiated based on research at Universiti Sains Malaysia.
1988 : Launching of IDPIS nationwide via TELITA, a national videotex system in collaboration with Telekom Malaysia.
1993 : Initial announcement by the Minister of Education on the setting up of Malaysia's National Poison Centre in USM.
1994 : Cabinet approved the setting up of the National Poison Centre (PRN) on March 30th.
1995 : PRN commenced operation by offering two services :
Drug and Poison Information
Education and Prevention
1996 : PRN services expanded to include:
Research and Documentation
Toxicology Laboratory
  : PRN launched it's Malaysian Drug and Poison Net on April 19th.
  : PRN officially launched by the Minister of Education on June, 28th.
1997 : 15th anniversary of IDPIS (1982-1997) - "Celebrating 15 years of Teamwork".
1998 : PRN accepted as a full member of the International Society of Drugs Bulletin (ISDB) based in Paris.
  : PRN designated as a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Drug Information effective on April, 6th.
  : PRN received the inaugural USM Quality Award in Service Category on October, 7th.
