ABOUT VIAGRALERT

Between March 27 and September 27, 1998, since Viagra was first approved by FDA, PRN recorded at least 235 news items about the drug in 5 major Malaysia newspapers. By October 27, the number increased to about 260. It is expected to increase further in the coming months.

This is unprecedented in that a drug yet to be registered in this country has had such a wide ranging publicity direct to the consumers. For all intends and purposes Viagra will be a prescription drug where "direct-to-consumer" promotional activities are legally prohibited under the Malaysian laws. This however has somehow been circumvented till this day.

More worrying still is the fact that many of these news items carry incomplete and unbalanced information. Some even bordered on sensationalism. This raises concern it can result in a number of misconceptions leading to potential misuse or abuse of the product. The concern is felt even more considering Malaysia has a vibrant young population in the sexually active age group. Thus, we share the Health Minister's concern about the possible adverse effects, not only in medical terms, but also socio-culturally. The mood is one of cautious optimism given the prevailing situation about the scarcity of accurate information. The reported death toll related to Viagra which began from just 6 has risen to 130 within a span of about 7 months. Not suprisingly that the available post-marketing information does show cases of "misuse" due to the lack of information or othrwise caused by "drug misadventure" on part of the users. Although the product is still regarded as "safe" but this is only in the context of proper and correct usage.

VIAGRALERT, is an attempt to redress this situation. It serves to redirect consumers and professionals to a number of selected websites. In so doing, it is our hope that  a more active and comprehensive self-directed learning about the subject could be facilitated. It is the intention of VIAGRALERT, to alert consumers on the importance of being fully informed about all their medication needs - not least Viagra.

VIAGRALERT, too features updated information under the section on news, provides links useful for consumers and professionals, about impotence, and selected titles on the subject, as well a free search facility.

All these however are not intended to substitute the need for consultation with your health care professionals. They are intended to facilitate such consultation and assist your participation in the decision-making process. We continue to caution consumers on the decision to obtain and use Viagra without proper face-to-face consultation.
