The Mufti of Egypt, Dr.Farid Wasil, disclosed that the World  Health Organization (WHO) awarded his Dar Al-Ifta  for the  Fatwa (religious decree) that declared smoking as  ''Haram''(forbidden) in Islam because of its damaging effects  to the human health.

Dr.Wasil suggested to addict smokers struggling to  quit smoking, to take medical, social and spiritual steps that would help them.

When asked about tobacco manufacturers, he replied, ''it is unlawful Islamically to produce tobacco and sell tobacco in a Muslim country, hazardous to the individual and society. ''
