STUART Watterton is retiring as managing director of British  American Tobacco (M) Bhd (BAT) with effect from July 31, and will be succeeded by Russell Cameron, currently area director of the company's Asia Pacific North operations.

Cameron had served as chief executive officer of Malaysian Tobacco Company (MTC) prior to its merger with Rothmans of Pall Mall Malaysia in November 1999.

In response to a query from Star Business yesterday, BAT confirmed Watterton's impending departure from the company, but did not give any reasons for his decision to retire.

In a short statement, the company said the 54-year old Watterton had headed BAT Malaysia since its inception following the merger of Rothmans and MTC.

He has spent 30 years with the BAT group, serving in various capacities in different parts of the world. His working experience with the group included service on the board of British American Tobacco Co Ltd as finance director and as director responsible for  special projects, human resources and corporate affairs, and in the legal and secretarial department.

Prior to his Malaysian appointment, Watterton was chief executive of WD & HO Wills Australia.
