Malaysia govt to continue financial assistance for tobacco planters
PRNewsAsia, 2002-03-22, via tobacco.org
KUALA LUMPUR (AFX-ASIA) - The government, National Tobacco Board and the Association of Tobacco Manufacturers Malaysia, have agreed to continue providing 2.50 rgt for every kilogram of dried tobacco leaves produced in 2002, Bernama quoted Primary Industries Minister Lim Keng Yaik as saying.
This special help, when first introduced, was to encourage tobacco producers to raise productivity and to alleviate their financial problems resulting from three years of flash floods in 1999-2001, Lim said.
"This special help will be divided equally between the growers and processors as in the previous year," Lim added.
He said the programme will benefit 20,000 families of tobacco growers, 2, 000 individual planters and processors and 320 processing companies.
The value of tobacco-based products exported, including cigarettes, in 2000 totalled 763.25 mln rgt, and for the first 11 months of 2001, total exports amounted to 644.68 mln rgt, Lim said.
