BRITISH American Tobacco (Malaysia) Berhad yesterday launched its  Code of Practice on the Prevention and Eradication of Sexual Harassment yesterday. It was launched by Human Resource Minister Datuk Dr Fong Chan Onn. The introduction of the Code of Practice was one of the aspects of the company's human resource initiative to ensure a workplace that promoted equality, fairness and respect for  individuality.

"We believe that a conducive and productive workplace is also one that is free from any sort of undesirable or unwarranted behaviour, and we are committed to our people to ensure they have such an environment," said British American Tobacco managing director Stuart Watterton.

The objective of adopting the Code of Practice was to establish adequate mechanisms within the organisation to prevent sexual harassment. This will address issues such as verbal, non-verbal, visual, psychological or physical harassment. Watterton said a year-long workshop would be conducted with all levels of staff at  British American Tobacco Malaysia to ensure the code was adopted unconditionally. Later, Fong said other companies should follow suit.
