Anti-ageing claim not so

The New Straits Times, November 6, 1995

Q: I've been told that Vitamin E can retard ageing and remove toxic chemicals from the body. Would this vitamin be good for me? I am 67 years old.

A: Vitamin E is fat soluble and when consumed, is stored in the body. The Recommended Dietary Allowance is 10mg per day for adult males and 8mg for females. This amount can be obtained without supplements. Plant oils (vegetable oil, margarine, salad dressing, dark green and leafy vegetables), grain products, liver, egg yolk, milk fat, nuts, seeds and butter, all contain Vitamin E.

In the body Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant. Thus, it has been touted as an anti-aging vitamin, but this claim has not been totally substantiated.

As Vitamin E is so wide-spread in foods, and can be stored in the body, it is hard for anyone to be deficient in this vitamin. We suggest that unless your doctor recommends that you take a specific vitamin for a health problem, you need not buy such supplements.
