- USM's Initiative to Battle Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) -
Antibiotic resistance is occurring everywhere in the world and represents one of the biggest threats to global health today, compromising the treatment of infectious diseases and undermining many other advances in health and medicine. Antibiotic resistance occurs naturally, but misuse of antibiotics in humans and animals is accelerating the process. Consequently, antibiotic resistance leads to longer hospital stays, higher medical costs and increased mortality.
Many studies reported that poor knowledge level exists among the general public of Malaysia, and this promotes more frequent and incorrect use of antibiotics. Therefore, effective and coordinated strategies are crucial to improve public awareness and understanding of AMR and promoting rational use of antibiotics to combating the unnecessary use of these drugs.
Responding to this urgency, the National Poison Centre as WHO Collaborating Centre (WHOCC) for Drug Information (Western-Pacific Region) established SMARTBIOTIC Toolkit as a repository of AMR educational materials. This is part of our steadfast effort in support of the WHO to promote Antibiotic Stewardship Program (ASP) and rational use of antibiotics through public campaigns.
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines antibiotic resistance as “the resistance of a microorganism to an antimicrobial drug that was initially effective for treatment of infections caused by it”. |
The National Poison Centre at the Universiti Sains Malaysia is a designated WHO Collaborating Centre for Drug Information (MAA-16) since 6 April 1998 |
