Entrepreneurs: Develop Your Own Product Formulations
In 2023, PRN, received a grant from the Industry & Community Network Division (BJIM) to launch a community project: "Capacity Building and Entrepreneur Empowerment in Developing Quality and Safe Traditional Health Product Formulations." This program guides entrepreneurs in creating traditional health product formulations backed by research and proven efficacy and safety.
PRN leads this program, leveraging its expertise in Drug and Poison Information and product laboratory analysis. Researchers from the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences contribute their expertise in traditional health product formulation and development. Ten potential Bumiputera entrepreneurs were selected through a joint evaluation with strategic partner, the Association of Malaysian Traditional Medicine Manufacturers (PURBATAMA).
This two-year program utilizes modules from PRN and PPSF, covering five phases: knowledge transfer, lab practicals, formulation development, GMP factory visits, and project presentation workshops. PRN and PPSF facilitators guide participants throughout the program, ensuring traditional product formulations meet National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) quality and safety guidelines.

Workshop on Fungal and Mycotoxin Management in Cocoa Beans
PRN played a significant role in the "Workshop on Fungi and Mycotoxin Management in Cacao Beans," held on July 30, 2025, at the Malaysian Cocoa Board. This event, a community initiative under the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Industry & Community Network Division, brought together 87 participants. Collaborating with PRN were other key partners, including USM's School of Biological Sciences, the Department of Chemistry Malaysia, the Malaysian Cocoa Board (LKM), and Team Medical and Scientific Sdn Bhd. Dr. Leong Yin Hui from PRN's team delivered a key session, explaining how mycotoxins like aflatoxin and ochratoxin form in cocoa and the serious health risks they pose. The workshop also focused on practical solutions, covering permitted mycotoxin levels and effective management strategies for farms and storage, ultimately strengthening industry relationships and paving the way for future efforts to improve the safety and quality of Malaysian cocoa.
