PRNLab: Toxicology Laboratory Services

Established in 1996, PRNLab is a core department within PRN. PRNLab serve as a national reference hub for toxicological analysis, research, and poisoning management. Located at USM’s Main Campus in Penang, PRNLab support various sectors. These include healthcare, law enforcement, industries, NGOs, and government bodies. PRNLab address concerns related to poisoning, chemical exposure, and toxicology.

Mission & Objectives

PRNLab are committed to public safety through toxicology expertise. Our goals are:

  • Poison Identification & Support: Provide accurate toxicological analysis. This aids in diagnosis, management, and prognosis of poisoning cases.
  • Surveillance & Monitoring: Track toxic exposures. Identify risks in vulnerable populations. 
  • Collaboration & Research: Partner with government agencies and NGOs. Develop advanced analytical methods in toxicology.

Accreditation

    1. MS ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited laboratory since 2011
    • PRNLab is accredited with MS ISO/IEC 17025:2017. This accreditation is an international standard for testing and calibration laboratories. Achieving this accreditation demonstrates that PRNLab meets rigorous technical competency and quality management system requirements.
    1. IKM Excellence Award
    • PRNLab has been recognised as a "makmal cemerlang" (excellent laboratory) by the Institute of Chemistry Malaysia. This recognition is granted based on the lab's consistent performance and contribution to the field of chemistry and analytical services. Being recognized as excellent by a professional body further demonstrates PRNLab's expertise and dedication to its work
    1. Private Laboratories by the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Division (NPRA) for Traditional Product Analysis Services.
    • The lab is recognized by the NPRA, which is a regulatory body under the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH). This recognition is essential for providing analytical services for traditional products. It underscores PRNLab's capability to assess and analyse traditional products to ensure their safety and compliance with regulatory standards.
